The recent second eruption on of Mount Ruang in Indonesia serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those living in areas prone to both seismic and volcanic activities. This volcanic event coincided with my journey to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where I joined fellow CEOs to visit a monument commemorating the resilience of a city profoundly affected by its own catastrophic earthquake in 1966. This disaster reshaped not only the landscape but also the spirit of the people in Uzbekistan’s capital.

A Lesson in Acceptance from Tashkent

In Tashkent, a conversation with a local tour guide about the 1966 earthquake moved me deeply. Despite the fear and destruction, the people of Tashkent have embraced a perspective of acceptance. They view earthquakes as parts of their lives, accepting the journey of the earth reshaping itself. This profound acceptance, coupled with a readiness to rebuild and move forward, is deeply ingrained in their culture.

Drawing Parallels Between Natural and Business Challenges

This perspective led me to reflect on how we, as entrepreneurs, handle threats in our environment. In business, we often use SWOT analyses to identify threats and devise strategies to mitigate them. However, the approach of the Tashkent community — accepting and adapting to these seismic shifts — offers a valuable lesson in resilience. What if we viewed business threats not just as obstacles but as integral parts of our growth journey?

Food for Thought

Imagine if we could integrate this level of resilience into our strategic planning. By embracing threats with a mindset geared towards adaptation and growth, we could transform challenges into stepping stones. This shift in perspective could fundamentally change how we prepare for and respond to the inevitable uncertainties of the business world.
