As I ponder the imminent changes reshaping Malaysia’s business landscape, I find myself both amused by the comic strip and concerned about our readiness for E-invoicing.
To recap, here’s the roadmap for Malaysia’s national electronic invoicing system:
- 01/08/2024: Electronic invoicing for taxpayers with an annual turnover of RM100 million or more.
- 01/01/2025: Mandatory electronic invoicing for taxpayers with an annual turnover of more than RM25 million and up to RM100 million.
- 01/07/2025: Mandatory electronic invoicing for all other taxpayers.
This isn’t just another bureaucratic change; it’s a pivotal move by the government to reduce tax collection leakage. It’s a transformation we should prepare for and, dare I say, welcome with open arms, even if your business hasn’t reached the MYR 100 million threshold.
E-invoicing goes beyond mere digitisation; it’s about revolutionising how we conduct business. Here’s why it’s essential and why you should get ready for this transformative journey:
- Inclusivity Matters: E-invoicing’s impact extends to all businesses, big and small. If you’re a vendor to one of those larger companies required to adopt E-invoicing, you might need to adapt sooner than you think. In Malaysia, 97% of businesses are SMEs, of which over 60% are MSMEs. This is a group that needs to start preparing early.
- Real-Time Approval: E-invoices require real-time government approval. This level of transparency makes verification a breeze, but it also means your IT infrastructure needs to be ready for the API integration.
- Benefits for Tax-Compliant Companies: E-invoicing ensures compliance and leaves little room for tax evasion. It levels the playing field for all contributors.
- B2C and E-Wallets: B2C transactions face unique challenges in E-invoice implementation. Streamlining this process is crucial, and I believe that e-wallet vendors will play a pivotal role in this aspect of the E-invoicing ecosystem.
Now is the time to be proactive. Don’t wait until the last minute and risk being caught unprepared. Let’s embark on this transformative journey together. Contact us today and stay ahead of the game.
